Seeking a Head Coach and Assistant Coaches for our Buffalo Bay Academy U15 Muskwak Hockey Team ready for the 2024/25 season

Kapawe’no First Nation – Under the First Nation Collegiate, the Buffalo Bay Academy is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Head Coach and assistants for our U15 Muskwak Male Hockey Team. The ideal candidates will align with our vision and mission, promoting the principles of teamwork, respect, and personal development among our young athletes. They will also incorporate the Seven Sacred Teachings and the Confident Athlete Program into their coaching philosophy to foster a nurturing and inclusive environment.

Principles:
1. Respect: Promote an atmosphere of mutual respect among athletes, coaches, and families.
2. Inclusivity: Ensure all athletes feel welcomed and valued, regardless of background or skill level.

4. Excellence: Strive for personal and team excellence both on and off the ice.
5. Nation: Foster a connection to the local community and Indigenous culture through hockey.
6. Wellness: Prioritize the physical and mental well-being of all athletes.
7. Growth: Support ongoing skill development and personal growth for each athlete.
Seven Sacred Grandmother/Grandfather Teachings:
1. Sakihitowin (Love) – Foster a caring and supportive team environment.
2. Manacihtowin (Respect) – Teach the importance of respect for oneself and others.
3. Sohkitehewin (Courage) – Encourage athletes to face challenges with bravery.
4. Kwayaskitatsowin (Honesty) – Promote integrity and honesty in all interactions.
5. Iyinisiwin (Wisdom) – Share knowledge and insights to guide personal and team growth.
6. Tapahteyimisowin (Humility) – Instill a sense of humility and groundedness in achievements.
7. Tapwewin (Truth) – Foster honesty and authenticity within the team.
We are here to empower youth through engagement in sports, promoting skill development, teamwork, and lifelong dedication to wellness and nation.
Key Responsibilities:
– Develop and implement practice plans and game strategies to enhance player performance.
– Conduct on and off-ice instruction, classroom training, and synthetic ice training throughout the school day, on-ice after school collaborating with the team Manager and Athletic Director.
– Work closely with assigned teachers and teacher tutors to ensure the 80/80 rule is adhered to, monitoring attendance and maintaining athletes’ average marks.
– Foster a positive team culture that embodies the academy’s vision, mission, principles, the Confident Athlete program and the Grandmother and Grandfather Seven Sacred Teachings.
– Conduct regular meetings and goal setting sessions with players and parents to ensure clear communication about goals and expectations.
– Mentor athletes in personal skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
– Maintain a safe and supportive environment during practices and games.
– Organize and facilitate team events, including training camps and nation outreach.
– Collaborate with assistant coaches, academy staff, and volunteers to support team development.
Qualifications:
– Previous coaching experience with high level certifications, preferably with youth U15 and/or U18 hockey teams.
– Strong understanding of hockey fundamentals and coaching techniques.
– Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
– Ability to motivate and inspire young athletes.
– Commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive team environment.
– Knowledge of Nêhiyawak Pimachihowin and values is an asset.
