March 4, 2025

Kapawe’no First Nation – Tansi! Bonjour! At Kapawe’no Nehiyawak School we integrate nehiyawawein, our cree language, alongside with a new French language program. The school recently introduced French classes, led by Ms. April Adamson, who is also the Grade 12 homeroom teacher at Buffalo Bay Academy. The French program targets Grade K-3 students, focusing on foundational phonetics, especially vowel sounds.

“So far the students have done an amazing job learning how to pronounce the vowel sounds. I am focusing on phonetics to provide students with a solid foundation as we learn to speak and read French words”, said Ms Adamson.

By using the Calgary Board of Education French Immersion Curriculum, the school ensures a consistent approach to learning French, as applied across turtle island (Canada). These efforts in teaching French add to the existing language initiatives, supporting language diversity and skill development among students. This approach strengthens both traditional and new language acquisition, contributing to a well-rounded education. KFN Collegiate’s commitment assures students grow in diverse linguistic abilities and real lifelong learning which is accrediated and supported by Hereditary Chief Sydney L Halcrow and Lifetime Councillor Debbie Chalifoux and Lifetime Councillor Pamala Halcrow.
