Revitalizing Language through Nêhiyawêwin Isihcikêwin Morning Sessions

Kapawe’no First Nation – Kapawe’no Nêhiyawak School continues to make strides through our innovative nêhiyawêwin isihcikêwin morning virtual session. The program focuses on “repeat after me” exercises and conversation practice in nêhiyawêwin, our Cree language.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Berlinda Sharkawi, the Grade 4 teacher, and aided by Ms. Linda, nêhiyawêwin Keeper, the program immerses students in a learning environment. Recent lessons have concentrated on “piyisisak” (birds), bringing the classroom alive with knowledge and language skills.

Highlighted birds (piyisisak) in the curriculum include:
– Apisci kahkakis – Magpie
– Cahcahkayow – Blackbird
– Kihew – Eagle
– Kahkakiw – Raven
– Kakako – Crow
– Oho – Owl
– Kehkehk – Falcon
– Kwikwisiw – Bluejay
– Mikisiw – Golden Eagle
– Okiskimanasiw – Kingfisher
– Omimiw – Pigeon
– Onocayikowiw – Hawk
– Pahkahahkwan – Chicken
– Kaskitesip – Black Duck
