High Prairie – April 13, 2023 – The Kapawe’no First Nation Collegiate held its first annual Black and Gold Game, spotlighting the talents of the Hockey Development at KFN Collegiate. The event, was met with enthusiasm from all participants and attendees.
The game was a notable success, bringing joy to student athletes, many of whom played key roles in its preparation and execution. The positive response was widespread among stakeholders, including Hereditary Chief, parents, coaches, and school officials. “Everything went smoothly,” said Brian D. Thomas, Athletics Director. “We’re thrilled and looking forward to 2025/26!”
The Hereditary Chief addressed the crowd, commending the students and staff for their hard work and the collective effort to elevate KFN Collegiate’s profile. Hard work is the heartbeat of progress, driving us to new heights at Kapawe’no First Nation and KFN Collegiate. Together, we elevate not just the schools, but the hopes and dreams of an entire Nation.
Superintendent Boh Kubrakovich-Kiniw highlighted the event’s significance and the long-term vision of creating this annual tradition. “It’s been great from the beginning steps to now this wow”. They also presented the 7 Grandmother and Grandfather Teaching Awards to student athletes, emphasizing dedication and nation spirit. The new Buffalo Bay Academy will really be an amazing step for 2025/26 school year.
Jorden Thiessen expressed the excitement of the day, highlighting her role in running the scoreboard and announcing the thrilling game moments. “Seeing the nation support was truly inspiring,” Thiessen shared. He thanked everyone involved for their dedication and looked forward to expanding student involvement in future events, offering roles like photographers, door greeters, and more.
The Black and Gold Game marks a milestone in KFN Collegiate’s journey, setting the stage for future growth and community involvement in athletics.
