A Message from Mr. Brian Thomas, Athletic Director of Kapawe’no Nêhiyawak School
Kapawe’no First Nation – As we embark on a new and promising year at our distinguished sports academy, Mr. Brian Thomas is deeply honored to address you as the Athletic Director. His journey from being an Olympian and scholarship athlete at Alabama to this role has taught him the immense value of both academics and athletics. Today, he would like to emphasize how numeracy, literacy, and the Nêhiyawêwin are integral to our students’ holistic development.

Academics and athletics are the pillars upon which our academy stands, and they are intrinsically linked. Just as he experienced the importance of balancing rigorous training with academic excellence, our students too must understand the synergy between these pursuits.

Numeracy, the language of numbers, equips our athletes with essential life skills. From analyzing game statistics to managing personal finances, numeracy empowers our students to make informed decisions both on and off the field. It fosters critical thinking and strategic planning, qualities that are invaluable in sports and in life.

Likewise, literacy, the ability to read, write, and comprehend, is the bridge between knowledge and action. Whether our students are deciphering playbooks or expressing their ideas in writing, literacy is the key to their success. It enhances communication, creativity, and problem-solving, qualities that set our athletes apart.

However, we are more than just a sports academy; we are a school deeply rooted in the Nêhiyawak way. Nêhiyawêwin is the essence of our identity, connecting us to our ancestors and preserving our heritage. It is a treasure that we must safeguard and cherish. By placing Nêhiyawêwin at the forefront of our educational journey, we ensure that our students carry forward the legacy of our people.

As Athletic Director, Mr. Thomas has witnessed the transformative power of sports and education. Our commitment to numeracy, literacy, and the Nêhiyawêwin is a testament to our dedication to developing well-rounded individuals who excel in every aspect of life. He believes that each one of you has the potential to achieve greatness, both as athletes and scholars.

Let this academic year be a canvas upon which you paint your dreams. Strive for excellence in your chosen sports, dedicate yourselves to your studies, and embrace the beauty of our Nêhiyawêwin. Together, we will continue to shape champions who not only conquer the field but also inspire and lead in all walks of life.

We are excited to be a part of your journey and look forward to celebrating your achievements in the coming year.
