Kapawe’no First Nation – The Bear Grease Musical, hosted at the Kapawe’no Nehiyawak School, was a resounding success, drawing in members from Kapawe’no First Nation and beyond. The gym was transformed into a vibrant hub of cultural celebration, blending elements of the classic film with the rich and amazing Nêhiyawak way of life.
Audiences were treated to a visually stunning performance, with costumes that creatively married traditional Nêhiyawak designs with the familiar styles of the original movie we all remember. The cast’s energy and talent shone, particularly in the dance sequences and the engaging interactions of the lead actors with the audience.The night’s highlight came with the audience joining in for the final song, a testament to the show’s immersive and communal spirit. Ivan McKenzie, overseeing sound and IT, shared his positive experience, “Being involved behind the scenes was rewarding. It was fascinating to see the stage come to life and be a part of this creative process.”
The event culminated in a meet-and-greet session, where the lead actor and director personally thanked Ivan for his contributions. This gesture underscored the strong nation bonds that the event fostered.
