Kapawe’no First Nation – In a remarkable showcase of talent and Nêhiyawak way of life , Mr. Fred Mack, a renowned educator from First Nation Collegiate (Kapawe’no Nêhiyawak School / Buffalo Bay Academy), performed with Grammy-nominated and Juno-nominated Cree singer, Cikwes, for an unforgettable performance.
Hailing from Wabasca, Cikwes, also known as Connie LeGrande, is celebrated for her soulful music deeply rooted in her Nehiyaw (Cree) heritage. Her latest achievements include a nomination for the 2023 Juno Awards for her album “kâkîsimo,” a full-length Cree language album that has also been recognized at the Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards and shortlisted for Edmonton’s Music Prize.
This collaboration marks a significant moment in the promotion and preservation of culture and language through music. Mr. Mack’s involvement in the performance highlights his dedication to fostering understanding and appreciation of Indigenous traditions among younger generations, aligning with his commitment as an educator at First Nation Collegiate.
