Kapaweno First Nation – In a unique hands-on learning experience, students at the Kapawe’no Nêhiyawak School & Buffalo Bay Academy through the LAWF learning were recently guided through the traditional process of processing a deer by their LAWF instructor, Mr Fred Mack and helper Mr Scott Courtorielle.This life long learning session acquired a new set of skills; through the Nêhiyawak way of life it was the understanding and respecting of the animals on the land and forest. Under the guidance of Mr. Mack, students learned how to use various tools safely and effectively, mastering techniques that have been passed down through generations.
The session highlighted the importance of sustainable practices and the ethical treatment of animals in forest and land management. Students engaged in the process from start to finish, gaining insights into the practical aspects of wildlife conservation and forestry management.
“This experience is invaluable,” said the students. “It’s not just about the technical skills, but also about understanding our connection with the land, animals and the responsibility that comes with it.”
The success of learning has encouraged LAWF to consider incorporating more such practical sessions in their curriculum, emphasizing the importance of hands-on learning in environmental education.
