Kapaweno First Nation – Buffalo Bay Academy’s latest Outdoor Education class, part of our LAWF (Land, Air, Water, and Fire) teachings, provided students with essential Wilderness First Aid skills by our teacher Mr Mack. In this session, the focus was on practical, life-saving techniques crucial for outdoor scenarios.
Students engaged in hands-on learning about treating hypothermia, a common risk in wilderness environments. They practiced recognizing symptoms and applying treatment methods. A key part of the lesson involved constructing makeshift stretchers, teaching them how to safely transport a patient to a more secure location.
Additionally, Mr Mack covered basic patient care skills. Students learned CPR, understanding its vital role in emergency situations. They also practiced the C-spine method for handling potential spinal injuries and learned the recovery position to ensure an unobstructed airway in unconscious patients.
Through these practical lessons, Buffalo Bay Academy students not only gain knowledge but also develop skills that prepare them for real-world situations, fostering a sense of responsibility and confidence in handling emergencies.
