Kapawe’no First Nation – At First Nation Collegiate, the week in Mrs. Jackie Halcrow’s class begins the day with the resonant tones of Nêhiyawêwin Isihcikewin, the Cree language and learning. At 8:00 am, the classroom transforms into a vibrant space of cultural and immersion for the teachers. Mrs. Halcrow, alongside the Nêhiyawawin Keepers, orchestrates a session that weaves together the learning of prayers, numbers, and the day’s curriculum. This session is more than a language lesson; it’s an embodiment of cultural awakening, fostering a deep connection to the land with the Nêhiyawak Miyo Pimachitiwin among students.
These early morning gatherings are instrumental in grounding teachers in their cultural identity, starting their day with a sense of nation and shared Nêhiyawak Miyo Pimachitiwin. The focus is on conversational Nêhiyawêwin, enabling twachers to engage with the language in a practical, lively manner. Through these interactions, they learn the structure and vocabulary of Nêhiyawêwin and imbibe the wisdom and teachings that are interlaced with Nêhiyawêwin.
