Edmonton, Treaty 6 – At Kapawe’no Nêhiyawak School, hockey is more than just a sport for four young friends – three in grade 4 and one in grade 5. It’s a passion that brings them together, both on and off the ice. Through the school’s Hockey Academy, they’ve honed their skills, eagerly preparing for the Native Alberta Hockey Championships (NAHC).
This year, they are part of the promising U11 team, a unit expected to grow and excel through both the Hockey Academy and the Confident Student Athlete program at the First Nation Collegiate.
But their connection extends beyond hockey. Each morning, you’ll find these four friends gathered around the grandfather drum in Mr. Cory Cardinal’s class, embracing their culture and Nation. Mr. Cardinal, who volunteers his time as the U11’s coach, is a testament to dedication, balancing his family life with his commitment to nurturing young talent. His presence at the NAHC this weekend is a significant support for the team.
