Kapawe’no First Nation – As part of the larger N?hinawak Nation, KFN is taking significant steps in learning with the endorsement of the Lifelong Learning Strategic Plan for 2024 to 2029. This plan supports the Nation’s right to education by including N?hinawak Miyo Pimacihowin, Nêhiyawawin, and sovereignty. It shows a commitment to previous agreements and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The plan combines traditional teachings with current learning methods, incorporating the Seven Grandfather/Grandmother Teachings and the Nehiyawak way of living. It aims to support economic, cultural, and Nehiyawak growth within the Nation. The Chief and Council’s approval highlights their dedication to principles and actions that promote ongoing learning. Hereditary Chief Sydney L Halcrow stated, “The establishment of the Lifelong Learning Council is a strategic move to ensure effective implementation and governance of our learning.”
This Lifelong Learning (LLL) council, based on the Nation’s own codes, shows a commitment to own-governance and Nêhiyawak preservation. It will manage the strategic plan, making sure it stays relevant and reflects the Nation’s changing needs.
The strategic plan is designed to be a living document, which means it will continue to involve the Nation, including Elders Knowledge Keepers and educational leaders. This approach allows the plan to change and adapt to new needs and goals of the Nation.
Councillor Debbie Chalifoux is the chair of the LLL Council. Bryan Richardson has been moved to Special Projects with the Nation and managing/monitoring Indigenous Edu- https://www.indigenousedu.com/ with the First Nation Collegiate. Rebecca Peterson has taken over as the head of Citizen Member Services. Boh Kubrakovich-Kiniw continues as the Superintendent of the First Nation Collegiate, overseeing the Kapawe’no Nêhiyawak School, Buffalo Bay Academy, FNVLC, and First Nation College.
The Chief and Council plan to present the Lifelong Learning Strategic Plan at the Nation meeting on April 20, 2024. They will discuss how the members on the Lifelong Learning Council will be filled from the Nation’s three family clans.
