Kapawe’no First Nation – Students from both Kapawe’no Nêhiyawak School (K-6) and Buffalo Bay Academy (7-12) are are leading the way in our sovereign foods program, spearheaded by the Grade 7 class and teacher Ms April Adamson and EA Ms Melissa Loupette.
The students are currently planting a variety of vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, squash, and pumpkins, as well as various flowers. This initiative enhances our school and fostering an understanding of sovereign food sources and sustainable agricultural practices.
Through this program , students are learning about the traditional “Three Sisters” of planting corn, beans, and squash, a technique that exemplifies intercropping and sustainability. They are also gaining insights into the life cycles, development, and diverse uses of the plants and soils. This hands-on approach is deepening their appreciation for traditional knowledge and sovereign food practices, bridging the gap between historical wisdom and contemporary environmental stewardship.
