Kapawe’no First Nation – the month of April marks National Poetry, and Ms Samantha Tomkins and Grade 5/6 students at Kapawe’no Nêhiyawak School are diving deep into the world of poetry. They are exploring various styles and poetic devices, enhancing their understanding of how poetry can express ideas, emotions, or tell stories in unique forms. This week, the focus was on cinquain poems, a specific type of poetry that follows a distinct structure.
Each student crafted a cinquain poem centered around one of the animals from the 7 Grandmother / Grandfather teachings, reflecting on the unique gifts these animals bring to people and how these teachings resonate in their own lives. After completing a rough draft in their poetry notebooks, students were tasked with typing their poems and accompanying them with an image, integrating computer skills, curriculum learning, and cultural teachings into one enriching activity.
