Kapawe’no First Nation – Our Buffalo Bay Academy Grade 7 class is engaging in a creative and immersive approach to learning by incorporating board games into the curriculum. These games are not only fun but they serve as effective learning tools.
Fostering Literacy and Numeracy Through Board Games: Board games are a fantastic way to enhance learning experiences. They can transform abstract concepts into tangible, interactive challenges that require strategic thinking and collaboration.
Role-Playing Games like Dungeons & Dragons (DnD): RPGs such as DnD are excellent for developing oral storytelling abilities and problem-solving skills. As students assume the roles of their characters, they’re encouraged to think creatively and articulate their thoughts and strategies, thereby improving their language and communication skills.
The Board Game ‘Root’ and Nêhiyawak Values: ‘Root’ is a particularly special game in your class’s repertoire. It not only provides entertainment but also serves as a cultural bridge to Indigenous values. The game emphasizes the interconnectedness of the forest ecosystem, mirroring the nation-centric worldview of many Indigenous cultures. By playing as woodland Nêhiyawak creatures like Kahkakiw (Crow), Mahkesis (Fox), and Pisiskes (Racoon), students learn about cooperation, resource management, and the importance of each species’ role in the forest’s health and stability.
