Kapawe’no First Nation – On May 4th, the drum beats at during traditional hand games filled the air at the High Prairie Annual Traditional Hand Games, marking a significant event for students across the region. Among the participants were our students from Buffalo Bay Academy, who are relatively new to the games.
Guided by the experienced hand of Herman Sutherland Sr., a teacher and custodian of this tradition, the students and staff of Buffalo Bay Academy have been receiving hands-on learning in the intricate techniques and deep meanings embedded in the hand games. Mr. Sutherland’s visits to the school have become a cornerstone of the students’ learning on the land, bringing theory to life through practice and participation.
Further enriching the experience, Scott Courtorielle, himself a student of Mr. Sutherland, has taken a pivotal role at the school. His dual talents as a singer and instructor have allowed him to elevate the learning experience, turning the games into a practice of skill and an act of preservation and celebration the Nêhiyawak miyo Pimachihowin.
The participation of Buffalo Bay Academy in the High Prairie Annual Traditional Hand Games is more than a school activity; it is a testament to the Nation’s commitment to preserving and honoring miyo pimacihowin.
