Oskana Cup 2024: Fostering Future Champions at the Aboriginal Youth Hockey Championship

May 13, 2024

Regina, Treaty 4 Territory – during the May 3-5 weekend, the buzz of competition and camaraderie echoed through the rinks of Regina at the Oskana Cup Aboriginal Youth Hockey Championship 2024. This hockey event drew teams and talent from across Western Canada, all converging with the same goal: to showcase their skills and passion for hockey.

Among the attendees were Boh Kubrakovich-Kiniw, Superintendent of First Nations Collective (FNC), and Brian D. Thomas, the Athletic Director, who played pivotal roles throughout the tournament in the area of scouting. Their presence was deeply personal experience and influential. As seasoned advocates of youth sports, both Boh and Brian engaged directly with players, parents, and others scouts, bringing a spirit of encouragement to the hockey event.

Superintendent Kubrakovich-Kiniw, with a rich history in hockey management and coaching, shared his extensive experience with young athletes aspiring to elevate their game to higher levels. Many of Boh’s former players, who still compete in the recreation division and coach their children, stand as testament to his enduring impact on the sport.

Brian D. Thomas, for his part, focused on the future, engaging in what could only be described as ‘Recruiting 101.’ He spent his time navigating the dynamics of the dressing rooms, discussing strategies with coaches, and spotlighting players to scouts, all in an effort to open doors for these young athletes.
The Oskana Cup stands as a cornerstone event for Aboriginal youth in hockey, providing a great place to compete and showcase their talents.
