Kapawe’no First Nation – At Kapawe’no Nêhiyawak School, the Grade 2/3 and Grade 5/6 class under the guidance of Mrs. Berlinda Sharkawi, combined creativity with essential life skills in a week filled with culinary adventures. This week’s foods class was an engaging blend of activities that catered to various aspects of meal preparation and design. While the Grade 5/6 students embarked on a virtual grocery shopping exercise, where each was tasked with finding ingredients for an assigned meal, listing where these items could be found in an online store, and pricing them out, the younger students had their unique challenge.
The Grade 2/3 students participated in a “Cake Challenge,” using play-doh to create imaginative cake designs. This hands-on activity allowed them to express their artistic skills in a fun and safe setting, avoiding the typical hazards of a kitchen. Their creations were judged by a staff member, adding a competitive twist to the activity and providing the students with valuable feedback on their designs. This not only enhanced their understanding of design principles and presentation but also highlighted the joy of creation. The week’s activities are a testament to the school’s commitment to innovative teaching methods that integrate traditional knowledge with practical life skills, nurturing both the creativity and Nêhiyawak identity of our students.
