Kapawe’no First Nation – Last week our students from Kapawe’no Nêhiyawak School and Buffalo Bay Academy went on field trips to the High Prairie Gun Range thanks to LAWF instructor Mr Fred Mack.
The grade 5/6 students at Kapawe’no Nêhiyawak School got to shoot .22 rifles, and the 7-12 students at Buffalo Bay Academy shot .22s and 12 gauge shotguns. They were able to do some target shooting and trap/skeet shooting. They were also able to shoot a bolt action, lever action and semi-auto rifle, as well as a double barrel break-action shotgun and semi-auto 12 gauge.
This was a very rewarding experience for the students, giving them a foundational introduction to an important way of life. Hunting can provide sustenance for many families, and now our students are one step closer to having the ability to provide for their own families. The students all participated in a firearm safety class before going to the range, learning the firearm safety rules, as well as the fundamentals of marksmanship and proper shooting practice.
Our top shooters are: Malakai, Aysha, Steven, Akira, Dillan, Tristen, Landyn, and Kendra.
