On May 24th, our dedicated grade 7-12 band drive down to Red Deer to perform in the Alberta Band Association Festival of Bands. They had some challenges leading up to the trip, such as some students not being able to make it. However, they gave it their all on stage and performed as best as they could. Afterwards they had a 1 hour workshop/clinic with internationally recognized musicians/conductors Ken Rogers and Ross McIntyre.
The adjudicators evaluated them on their stage performance and the clinic. Some of the criteria included attentiveness, attitude, ability to respond and overall growth.
They got an overall rating of “Excellent” (second highest) and for their clinic they got “Superior” (highest). The students combined traditional Cree instruments and modern wind band instrumentation. They were the first ever First Nation band to perform in the festival, leading the way, and putting themselves and the school on the map.
Students appreciate the hard work Mr. Fred Mack has done and the gift he has given them through learning music, allowing the sound of music to resonate at Buffalo Bay.
