Kapawe’no First Nation – Music Interview with Students Sierra Sutherland (Trumpet and Percussion Player) and Aysha Bellegarde (Clarinet Player)
Sierra:
“My experience in music this year has been really good. I didn’t realize I was going to be able to play the trumpet at all, but I learned it. I liked the trips a lot; they were a lot of fun. Performing on a big stage for the first time was scary but fun. I developed confidence and skills that I didn’t realize I had before. My favorite experience this year was the Red Deer trip. It was easier and I was more comfortable after having performed before. On our Edmonton trip, I didn’t realize we would do so well, but we did really good! I was the most nervous for our year-end music concert at school because everyone I knew was there watching me and taking pictures.”
Aysha:
“I remember in grade 6 at my school, they first introduced Band and I wanted to do it, but I didn’t get my form in on time, so I never ended up doing it. I never tried again until this year. I never thought I would be that interested in music, but now I see where it can take you. I like it way more than I did before. The biggest highlight this year was when we went to the Yardbird Suite and watched Mr. Mack’s jazz band perform, as well as the other schools. I really liked watching that. I have experience being on stage with dance, and this time I was nervous, but it was a different type of nervous. Usually with dance, I wonder ‘am I going to make this skill,’ but with music, it’s ‘am I going to get all my notes and remember them on stage.’ Different types of performing helped me gain more confidence and maturity.”
