Kapawe’no First Nation – At KFN Collegiate’s Kapawe’no Nehiyawak School and Buffalo Bay Academy, the heartbeat resonates with the rhythm of the drum, a powerful symbol of nationhood connection. Enhancing the teachings of pimachimowin through wakotowin and Nehiyawewin involves song and the significance of the drum, which can be heard daily throughout the hallways and in the outdoor teepee classroom. Grade 3 Teacher Mr Cory Cardinal Jr, Mr. Scott Courtoreille and Superintendent Boh Kubrakovich-Kiniw have shared the lead in teaching students about the importance of drumming and traditional singing. One song that has become particularly meaningful is the Ahcak Muskwa (Spirit Bear) song, which embodies the spirit of sakihitowin (love) and connection to Mother Earth.
Ahcak Muskwa song invites students and teachers to engage in a shared bond experience, fostering a sense of unity and identity within the nation. As they participate, “Way ah yah ho, way ah yah ho, yah way – o hey yo,” students and staff learn not only about the chants of their ancestors but also the stories and significance behind them. The repeated phrases about the Ahcak Muskwa emphasize the importance of sakihitowin and manacihitowin for all living things. Through song and drum, students and staff are enhancing their understanding of pimachimowin and nationhood, enriching their lifelong learning journey while strengthening their ties. The vibrant sounds of the drum create an atmosphere of celebration and learning, making every day an extraordinary experience for all students and staff.
