October 31, 2024

Kapawe’no Firest Nation – Grade 4 students at Kapawe’no Nehiyawak School participated in a reading circle with Elder Knowledge Keeper Don Cunningham. Don, known for his fluency in Nêhiyawêwin, shared a story that engaged the students today in Mrs Berlinda Sharkawi’s class. During his regular visits, twice a week, have become a significant part of the schools literacy efforts and has helped strengthen our Nêhiyawêwin.
In addition to reading circle, Don Cunningham contributes to the Nêhiyawêwin Circle. Alongside fellow KFN Collegiate staff member Glady Anderson, he engages in Pimachimowin, enriching the students’ understanding of our Nehiyawak steps and Nêhiyawêwin. These interactions support the school’s and KFN Collegiate goal of fostering literacy, Nêhiyawêwin and Pimachimowin among students.
