Kapawe’no First Nation – As the Superintendent of KFN Collegiate, I am excited to share our report, reflecting our dedication to nehiyawak pimachimowin, nehiyawewin, and the importance of relationships within our schools. This past month has been pivotal in laying the groundwork for a successful academic year, highlighting various initiatives that align with our commitment to our values and nation involvement. Our focus on nurturing these principles has begun to create a more enriching learning environment for all students. Numeracy and literacy has been a focal point for us this year raising the bar for our students.
One significant area of focus has been nehiyawak pimachimowin, which emphasizes incorporating Nehiyaw culture and history into our curriculum. Teachers are participating in meetings and workshops to learn relevant pedagogies that honor Nehiyawak ways of knowing. By inviting Knowledge Keepers into the classrooms, we provide students with unique learning experiences that deepen their understanding of our traditions and promote respect for diversity.
Activities such as drumming and storytelling have also been integrated into lessons, allowing students to connect in meaningful ways and still receive the hours needed to advance with accredited balanced learning.
The Nehiyawewin Isihcikewin online sessions, in the classrooms incorporating in the core subjects marks another vital step in promoting the language across various grade levels. These classes focus on developing conversational skills while incorporating Nehiyawak context, making it accessible to students of all proficiency levels. We have also expanded online sessions and in class for Grades 7-12, alongside our established programs for younger students in Grades K-6. Additionally, the resource center dedicated to nehiyawewin continues, offering a wide range of books for the teachers and digital tools that empower students to explore the language independently and foster a love for learning.
In September, we launched the Muskwak U13 program, operating Monday to Thursday in High Prairie. This initiative focuses on several key areas: Off-Ice Training, where students engage in skill development on synthetic ice to enhance their hockey abilities in a supportive environment; On-Ice Training, featuring regular sessions that emphasize teamwork, discipline, and skill enhancement while fostering a sense of community among young athletes; Academics Monitoring, with daily meetings to oversee students’ schoolwork and attendance, ensuring they maintain a balance between their sports commitments and education; and Life Skills Development, which instills values of commitment and teamwork, encouraging participants to cultivate essential life skills that extend beyond the realm of sports.
Overall, our commitment to enhancing nehiyaw learning and nehiyawewin is reflected in these initiatives, and we are eager to see the positive impact they have on our students and nation. Together, we are fostering a brighter future that honors our shared pimachimowin.
