Kapawe’no First Nation – Buffalo Bay Academy students recently enjoyed a lifelong learning journey led by Knowledge Keeper, Herman Sutherland Sr. This immersive day, set on the lands of the Kapawe’no First Nation, aimed at teaching students the skills necessary for survival and self-reliance. Guided by Mr. Sutherland, the students walked through the woods, learning not only to set traps but also to appreciate the connection between nature and nehiyawak pimachimowin. His expertise offered the students a unique perspective on living off the land.
The experience also highlighted the incredible biodiversity of the territory, encouraging students to recognize various plants and animals crucial to traditional practices. Through captivating stories in nehiyawewin and hands-on demonstrations, Mr. Sutherland instilled a respect for nature as well as invaluable knowledge about sustainable living. This learning day on the land was more than just an addition to the school’s curriculum; it was a meaningful step towards strengthening nehiyawak pimachimowin and empowering the students with practical traditional wisdom.
