Kapawe’no First Nation – Our two talented oskinikskwiwak from Ms. Sam Tomkins’ class at Kapawe’no Nehiyawak School have captivated the nation by singing the “waniska” morning song in Nehiyawewin. This song, a call to wake up, celebrates the start of a new day with harmonious tones, inviting students from our KFN Collegiate to appreciate the beauty of nature. Beginning with “waniska pewapan oma” (Wake up! The sun is coming), the students’ voices fill the school’s corridors with warmth and optimism, inspiring everyone to embrace the dawn.
The performance proceeds with “asay piyesisak ki-nikamowak” (The birds are already singing) and concludes with “pe-miyonakwan kitaskinwa” (How beautiful this land of ours is). Through these lyrics, the young singers spread joy and a deep connection to their environment, embodying the role of cultural ambassadors. Supported by Ms. Tomkins, who integrates traditional songs into their education, these students proudly celebrate their heritage, reinforcing cultural identity and inspiring their peers and community to honor nehiyawak traditions each morning.
