Creative Approach to Nêhiyawewin Learning Through Music

Kapawe’no First Nation – The morning online Nêhiyawewin Isihcikewin program has integrated music into its teaching methods, aiming to advance language learning in creative ways. The initiative offers students another avenue for engaging with nêhiyawewin. Music, known for its ability to captivate attention and improve memory, serves as a tool to enhance comprehension of the language. Under the guidance of Mr. Colin Campbell, students are exposed to songs that incorporate key language elements. This innovative approach supports diverse learning methods, potentially increasing student interest and participation.

Recently, Mr. Campbell introduced the animal song to the Grade 1 and 2 class, an example of how music is being used in learning. This approach is part of several activities designed to integrate nêhiyawewin learning into practical and relatable contexts for students. In Grade 1&2, Mrs. Halcrow and Mrs Gladue have played a supportive role in moving the Nêhiyawewin Isihcikewin program forward by assisting with these new teaching strategies. The collaboration between educators highlights a commitment to language learning and offers a dynamic way for young learners to engage in nêhiyawak pimachimowin.
