Kapawe’no First Nation – Athletic Director Mr. Brian Thomas, a former Olympian has been actively managing the integration of nêhiyawewin into various athletic programs working with our nêhiyawewin keepers. Balancing his time between the daily physical education program, the hockey program with Buffalo Bay Academy, and the after-school activities, Mr. Thomas incorporates learning with physical activities. This unique approach aims to enhance pimachimowin among students while promoting physical fitness. By applying nêhiyawewin in sports settings, students can gain practical use of pimachimowin.
The programs include a range of activities using Nehiyawewin terminology, such as ki nohte metawahn for games. Students participate in sports like pakisiwin for hand games, pimotatowin for archery, and pakahatowin for baseball. Additional activities include muskimut pakahatowan for basketball, pakamatohowin for boxing, pakamapiswewin for golf, and miskwami mitawiwin for hockey. Other options like kwaskwaskinatowew for lacrosse and eta kapimpatak for track and field further underline the integration. This supports both physical education and nêhiyawewin skills development.
