Kapawe’no First Nation – Today marks a significant milestone for the Kapawe’no First Nation Collegiate schools as they welcome a new buffalo drum to their already growing drum groups. The Kapawe’no Nehiyawak School Muskwaak Jrs (K-3), under the dedicated leadership of Mr. Cory Cardinal and Mr Scott Courtorielle, played a pivotal role in introducing the new grandfather drum. This addition not only enriches nehiyawak pimachimowin within the schools but also reflects the growing interest and participation in drumming among students. When Mr. Cardinal first joined the Kapawe’no Nehiyawak School in 2022, drumming was modest in size, with only a handful of students showing interest. Now, the addition of the buffalo drum stands as a testament to the flourishing tradition within the KFN Collegiate.
The new buffalo drum joins three other active and advanced drum groups within the schools, reinforcing the rich pimachimowin upheld by the Kapawe’no First Nation Collegiate. These groups highlight their unity and dedication as they perform songs that resonates through their virtual program, in conjunction with Buffalo Bay Academy Muskwak Srs. The ceremonial integration of the buffalo drum further enhances the nehiyawewin isihcikewin, emphasizing the importance of traditions and learning through music and storytelling.
