Kapawe’no First Nation – The Kapawe’no First Nation Collegiate gym was filled despite a snow day with a vibrant celebration on Monday December 9, 2024, as the KFN Collegiate schools and students came together for sohkeyihtakosiw niyanan saka mostos mistikwaskihk (Honouring our Buffalo Drum). This event, which marked a morning of nêhiyawak mino pimachimowin, was a resounding success, highlighting the deep-rooted nêhiyawak way of life.
The ceremony began with a pipe ceremony, then a grand entry both a practice steeped in respect and reverence for the elders knowledge keepers and leaders present. Highlighting the morning’s schedule were the continued inspiring performances by the Muskwak Jrs, Muskwak Srs, and students from Buffalo Bay Academy Srs. Their drumming and songs echoed through the gym, carrying the traditions and stories, captivating all who attended.
A significant portion of the celebration was dedicated to honoring the steadfast leadership of Hereditary Chief Sydney L. Halcrow, Lifetime Councillor Deb Chalifoux, and Lifetime Councillor Pam Halcrow. These remarkable individuals have continuously demonstrated a commitment to fostering unity and preserving nêhiyawak mino pimachimowin of the Kapawe’no First Nation. They were celebrated with a heartfelt honor song, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the nation’s identity and well-being.
All were treated to the spirit of unity that permeated the event included the saying of our 7 Sacred Grandmother and Grandfather teachings by our classes lead by our teachers. KFN Collegiate expressed gratitude to everyone who attended and contributed to the celebration, making it a memorable success. The gathering was a testament to the strength and vibrancy of the nêhiyawak mino pimachimowin, leaving all inspired and appreciative of the rich traditions that continue to thrive within KFN Collegiate and the nation.
