Kapawe’no First Nation Collegiate Sovereign Foods Program – Spring Update

May 15, 2025

Kapawe’no First Nation – We’re excited to share that the Kapawe’no First Nation Collegiate Sovereign Foods Program is off to a strong start this season! Our team has successfully expanded our growing space by constructing new raised garden beds and creating our own nutrient-rich soil blend, setting a strong foundation for a productive year.

Students from all grade levels have been enthusiastically engaged in every stage of the process, from sowing seeds to planting seedlings, gaining valuable hands-on experience in sustainable food production. Currently, we have a thriving bed of lettuce and an assortment of herbs, including parsley and basil.

Looking ahead, we’re preparing to plant potatoes and transplant our tomato seedlings into the garden. In addition, we’ve recently started sowing trays of tobacco, which we plan to cultivate throughout the summer.
